i guess i hadn’t seen your research logs before. how did tati get those things anyway?
Well, she expressed an interest in ‘em, and I figured more brains were better than one! Didn’t see the harm in showin’ ‘em to her in case she caught on to somethin’ I hadn’t.
i guess she wasn’t much help, huh? did you two learn anything from the experiments?
Well, that it didn’t work!
Her whole reasonin’ behind it was since Claire and Zeke are all identical in terms of their genes and whatnot, it should be pretty easy to fill in the gaps of one with the other.
But I figure the problem was ‘cause the bits of stuff that make ‘em up in this place ain’t exactly like genes. So, well, it wasn’t exactly like puzzle pieces slippin’ into place!
yeah it sounded uh… pretty gnarly from the recordings.
lots of adjustments and stuff.
did you ever think maybe it wasn’t working? i mean, while you were doin’ it?
I mean, I ain’t exactly familiar with what it oughtta be like! Honestly, I didn’t know it wasn’t workin’ til the thing hurt Tati. Thought there’d be some kinda incubation period where it hadta heal. I mean, y’know.
Recover from the procedure, et cetera!

i remember scraping my knee on my bicycle and my dad tying a string around my wiggly tooth and slamming a door and digging my fingernails into my hands in high school when i was trying not to cry or something like that

but that’s ‘cause i gave all of those to the radio.
i dunno. maybe you have stuff like that too, but it got lost somewhere along the decades.

uh, in the research notes, they seem like they’re in pain. like a lot of it. and uh, like, the things around their bodies – i mean, yeah, i probably could’ve told you arms and legs aren’t made up of shampoo and gum and things like that.
i don’t know why tati didn’t.
I mean, we ain’t made of audio waves out there, either, but look at us now!
huh. guess you’re right, i’ve never looked really close at my hands before.

yeah, that sure isn’t skin. but couldn’t tell you what it is.
I mean, I’ve covered myself in pixels, mostly. Ain’t got a clue how it works for you!
i guess i’m saying –
i’m happy to provide, uh, surgical consultation in the future, if i can.
but it also got me to thinking- when you were working on me, it didn’t hurt at all. and i could’ve felt some kind of pain! but it was all just a little uncomfortable, maybe, until everything slotted into place.

i betcha next time you’ll be able to tell if it’s working or not based on whether it hurts.
like maybe if it’s right, it’ll be easier.
